HHS extends transitional relief through 2019

04-16-2018

The latest guidance from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) allows us to extend transitional (grandmothered) health plans that do not meet Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements for another year. This means that your clients in existing transitional relief plans (those that do not comply with ACA protections) can keep their plans through December 2019, as permitted by state law.

Why this matters

This extension will allow thousands of our members to renew their transitional plans. Without the extension, those clients would be forced to transition or shop for other health plans.

The applicable state also must allow for the extension

States may decide to allow a shorter extension, but not a longer period. States can also choose to apply this extension to both individual and small group markets, to only the individual, or to only the small group market.
