HHS Issues Extension of Transitional Relief Through 2018

News Image 03-02-2017

The latest guidance from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) allows us to extend transitional (grandmothered) health plans that do not meet Affordable Care Act requirements for another year. This means that your Individual and Small Group clients in existing transitional relief policies (those that do not include ACA mandates) can keep their plans through December 2018.

The HHS extension applies to policy years that start on or before October 1, 2018, provided that they end by December 31, 2018. The applicable state also must allow for the extension. States may decide to allow a shorter extension, but not a longer period. States can also choose to apply this extension to both individual and small group markets, to only the individual market, or to only the small group market.

How we’re letting brokers know about this
At this time, we are awaiting additional guidance from the Ohio Department of Insurance and the carriers we work with on the implementation of the extension. We’ll keep you informed as we learn more. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact BUA.
